Alexa vs Google Assistant: Which smart assistant wins?

He's reviewed everything from vacuum cleaners to beer brewing robots in pursuit of the perfect smart home. He wants the smart home to make him feel powerful, and it's getting there. PCMag supports Group Black and its mission to increase greater diversity in media voices and media ownerships. Google Assistant doesn't have nearly as many third-party plug-ins, but it's much easier to talk to. It can understand different requests more easily than Alexa, and that's very appealing. Despite Google’s fine performance in this arena, the integration of the popular Skype service and intercom feature put Alexa slightly over the top.

But if you have a specific need, there's likely a better smart speaker for you. For the midrange models, the Echo and Nest Audio sound similar, with generally good audio quality that can easily fill a room. The Nest Audio lacks a bit of bass, while the Echo doesn't have much treble finesse, but both still offer high-quality sound considering their size and price. I’ve been PCMag’s home entertainment expert for over 10 years, covering both TVs and everything you might want to connect to them. I’ve reviewed more than a thousand different consumer electronics products including headphones, speakers, TVs, and every major game system and VR headset of the last decade.

Location triggers: Amazon Alexa

You can talk to them from your phone or via a dedicated smart speaker, and the big benefit is hands-free control, so you can get your gadgets working without having to physically touch them. Within the limitations above, both Alexa and Google Assistant make it fairly easy to control media with your voice. For example, if you’re listening to music on one speaker, you can ask to move it to a different room or group so long as you remember its name in the Alexa or Google Home apps.

This is great for helping Alexa know where to jump into action when you want to do something. Google Assistant can handle up to three actions in a single voice command. Saying "Hey Google, turn off the lamp and lock the door" is much faster than making separate requests like on Alexa.

Amazon Echo vs Google Home: smart features

You simply ask Google to help you speak a particular language or to turn on interpreter mode, and it does the rest. It's not as fluid as actually speaking the other language since people need to pause between phrases to allow Google time to translate, but it's incredible to have this feature. You can view all of your Google Assistant lists and notes at assistant.google.com/lists/mainview. One of the best examples of Alexa's superiority with routines is the simple option to have it play a sound or message whenever a sensor triggers on the front door. No matter how loud my music is - and I tested this to the extreme - it hears my wake word easily. Even with a whisper - ok, a loud whisper, but a whisper nonetheless - it hears me.

It doesn't have the number of third-party skills Alexa does, but it's still robust, and easier to talk to. The discontinued Google Home Max was easily the loudest first-party smart speaker out there, but it's no longer available. Now, the Echo Studio is by far the strongest in terms of sound quality, with powerful audio and the ability to fill a room with directional sound thanks to its angled drivers. Both assistants obviously integrate with their company's respective music services, and in some cases offer the ability to link to third-party offerings as well. Google Home comes with the company’s own virtual personal assistant Google Assistant. The service is generally powerful, allowing you to perform a variety of tasks, including turning on your lights and accessing your music.

oogle Displays

OK, maybe this is a subjective one, but I like Alexa's sense of humor better. As a result, she now has over 3,000 third-party "skills," which are basically voice apps. Ask Alexa to enable one and she'll learn how to do something new.

Nest’s wide range of security products is now compatible with Google Assistant. This means you can connect your Nest doorbell, cameras, alarm system, and even thermostat to your Google Home app. Now you can remotely monitor your home in real-time from another device, trigger the alarm if you suspect anything fishy, etc. Google Nest Hub max has all the functionality as the Google Nest hub. The difference isthat it has a camera and a slightly larger display screen.

The camera can also be used to look in on your house while you're away if security is a concern. The smallest smart speaker available but one of Google's most popular. With 40 per cent stronger bass than the original Mini, the 2nd Gen Nest Mini offers a lot for its size.

But as each platform comes into its own, it becomes more and more complicated to assess. When you factor in hardware, software, privacy and everything in between, which platform really is the best? It's time to take a deep dive -- and we'll start our comparison by looking at the entry-level smart speakers in each camp. Google Assistant, meanwhile, uses the Google Shopping platform, so it has a wider reach. However, finding specific products or getting the results you want may be more challenging, especially without an accompanying smart display. You can also reorder an item, but Google can’t give the same recommendations as Alexa can.

Amazon Echo Show 10

Simply say, "Alexa, change your wake word." Alexa will prompt you to pick from the list of offered wake words. Sure, it’s a step up from your phone’s speakers, but not a match for a decent, dedicated Bluetooth speaker. For the Nest Mini, Google Nest doubled the bass and made it possible for the speaker to adjust its volume based on the level of background noise in the room. Although the Nest Mini only has three mics, it does a superior job at picking up voice commands, even from a distance. When it comes to aesthetics, the two smart speakers differ in size, but are both covered with fabric and use LED lights to visually communicate. Set next to one another, it’s apparent that the new spherical shape of the Echo Dot makes it look larger than the Nest Mini — nearly double its height.

If you have a smart display with a camera, then Alexa uses Skype for video calls, while Google Duo is the equivalent on Nest Hub Max. This helps control all kinds of devices and services, like starting a Spotify playlist when you get home from work. You can also get reminders about picking up tomatoes at your preferred grocery store. Google Assistant has inbuilt more than 10 lakhs of actions and commands into the product and it may cover all the possible queries of end-users. Google allows users without any programming knowledge to develop custom actions. Like the new Echo, it also has a Zigbee smart hub built-in so you can connect with Zigbee devices without the need to pay for a separate hub.

Google Nest Audio

The fourth-generation Echo Dot has a 1.6-inch speaker, and you can connect the Echo Dot to a larger speaker if you want. With advanced Bluetooth audio support, voice control, and a 3.5mm audio jack, the Echo Dot is a low-cost Alexa controller. The Home's far-field microphone is about as effective as the Echo's -- just be sure to speak clearly to either device if you have a complex command.

Previously, the app was only useful for setting up your smart speaker and syncing your compatible devices. Now, the main page of the app shows shortcuts for common tasks like broadcasting a message or turning off your lights. Scroll down for a room by room view of all of your connected gadgets.
