Covered in recycled fabric, this is bigger and taller but still looks like the Nest Mini. The difference is that it’s focused much more on audio quality, making it the best Google option for music. We found it great at reproducing bass and like that it has Bluetooth to play music from your phone. Voice assistants are clever helpers that are a key part of your smart home system, responding to your instructions, serving up information and controlling your home appliances.
Both assistants offer some form of multiroom audio functionality, including creating groups of speakers via your smartphone. Alexa and Google Assistant also support audio playback from some music services to Sonos speakers, while Google Assistant can communicate with any Chromecast-connected speaker. And both Google Assistant and Alexa also come built in to a number of the best smart speakers. Thousands of third-party apps bring out the best from the Alexa platform and offer multiple new capabilities. With a 7-inch screen, the Google Nest Hub is the smaller of Google's smart displays. Much like a smart speaker, it can be used to play music, find out the news, get weather updates and control smart home devices in your home.

Smart home routines connect a variety of settings for smart devices under a single command. It’s a great way to prepare a smart house for the morning, set the mood for an evening dinner, get the family ready for bed, and a lot more…all you have to do is set them up. With Google Nest Mini, there are fewer compatible music services sources, but you can use Spotify, Pandora, YouTube, Deezer, and Google Play Music, among other options. In 2019, Google revamped its Nest brand with a new focus on privacy — some compatibility partnerships ended, some continued, and some were stuck in development limbo for the foreseeable future. This has slowly worked itself out over time, but Nest compatibility is simply more limited, and you’ll need to study each smart device carefully to make sure it’s compatible with the Nest Mini.

It's because voice assistants have to choose one reply within a few seconds. That quick turnaround doesn't allow time to browse every single website on a topic, even with the processing powerhouse involved.

Search for a recipe on your phone, and you can send any of 5 million different options to the Home. It'll walk you through the ingredients and step-by-step directions. That list doesn't touch on what the Home can do as an entertainment device or a smart home controller -- more on both in just a bit. Alexa has an edge with third-party functionality, thanks to thousands of different skills that can do everything from order pizza to read a bedtime story. It tends to require very specific syntax, though, especially when activating and using most of those skills. It makes Alexa a bit hard to talk to unless you get used to phrasing requests how Alexa wants to receive them.
Most recently, Google released the Nest Hub Max, putting Google Assistant in a 10-inch smart display. It's the first product to come out under the converged brand name of Google and smart home security brand Nest. Like the Echo Dot, the speaker is puck shaped, if a little more pebble-like with softer edges, and has a top side covered in a fabric speaker mesh. You can pick up the Google Home Mini in a range of colors, with four flashing LED lights illustrating when it's listening to your commands and showing the volume level. With beefed-up sound at the price of a standard Echo model it's well worth looking at the third-gen Echo if you're thinking of buying a new smart speaker.

In these cases, you're better off whipping out your smartphone to find the best information. Google's smart displays are pleasant to use, particularly with how many video streaming services they support. It's not a perfect feature but is more capable than what we experienced with Alexa. Price is a big talking point with smart speakers, especially if you’re interested in bringing multiple smart speakers to your home.
Priced at £239.99 and £189 respectively, both offer a 10-inch HD display allowing you to make video calls and watch videos in addition to the typical smart speaker features. The 4th Gen Dot sounds significantly louder than the Nest Mini. But the Echo Dot’s microphones simply aren’t as sensitive to voice commands. All in all, the Nest Mini wins for voice recognition, and the Echo Dot wins for music playback.
Take calendars — Assistant users need to import any third-party data into Google Calendar. Alexa supports linking outside calendar accounts directly, but you’re limited to Google, Microsoft, or Apple iCloud. We found plenty of articles that summarize what each platform can (or can't) do, but many skimmed over how well each does basic tasks. We also didn't see very much information about how these platforms leverage their smartphone apps.
The Google Home is much more limited -- lists other than shopping lists are not supported. This is a capable 7-inch smart display that is ideal for controlling your home from your bedside. It doesn’t have a camera so it’s not for video calls, but it works with a lot of streaming services for watching shows or, more realistically, checking a recipe video on YouTube. With these, you can use your voice to get internet-connected smart plugs and appliances to work together via an app on your phone or tablet, and you can control them with spoken instructions. Whether you’re asking Alexa to arm your security camera or telling Google to turn on your reading light, there’s a lot you can do with a smart assistant. Both assistants can listen for a few seconds after your first voice command, so you don't get weary of repeating wake words.

To be fair, neither voice assistant requires more than one user account to start answering questions and controlling smart home devices. But you miss out on things like personalized reminders and access to your meticulously-curated Spotify playlists when you don't link multiple accounts. To set up your Smart Home, you’ll first have to add compatible devices to your Google Home app. Once connected, you can control the lights, temperature using the thermostat settings and ask Google Assistant to cast music or video.

Google Home was the company's first foray into smart speakers back in 2016 and it has been around ever since . It has all the usual smart speaker features such as reminders, alarms, weather updates, and playing music but it also supports multiple users. What this should mean is that each person in your house gets a personalised experience because Google Assistant should be able to distinguish between voices.
